Upthreading

Care, ritual, remembrance.

Naomi Wanjiku

“My grandmother used sisal strings to make her everyday working baskets and ropes.

The strings connected her to the past, grounded her in the present, and carried her into the future - to her descendants.

In this body of work I construct, deconstruct, and reconstruct the knowledges she passed on to me. ”

Threads of Continuity

“My grandmother made strings from indigenous shrubs, twisting them into sisal threads for weaving. From her, I learned that fiber carries memory.”

These fiber works extend that lineage, transforming thread, fabric, and strings into contemporary forms. Each piece reconstructs ancestral knowledge while opening new possibilities for material expression. Through weaving, braiding, and layering, the works connects past, present, and future through craft.
